A wreck of possibilities, a volatility of stars

I wish merely to register my pleasure that when I went looking for the uncredited actor playing the dean of the law school in the early scenes of Winterset (1936), I found that Murray Kinnell had the kind of Wikipedia biographer who includes short reviews with their subject's stage and screen resume. "An unusual role for Kinnell as a derelict one-time gentleman; the film opened in July 1931." "'No man is a hero to his valet', as Kinnell's character in this murder mystery could testify." "Kinnell as yet another butler, though this time with an unexpected flourish." I am much more used to finding this kind of partisanship on social media: with no prior attachment to an actor whom I did not notice previously in a handful of pre-Codes, just its enthusiasm makes me want to see these lovingly noted small parts even when a non-zero quantity of Charlie Chan seems to be involved. I hope Kinnell would have appreciated his future, however microscopic fandom.

[#272 | Choose Your Battles] Voting Post

Here are the entries for this week's challenge:

List of entries )

In order to vote, please reply to this post using the form provided. All comments are screened, and entries are listed in the order they were submitted. For your vote to qualify, you must fill out your entire voting card (all three spots) in order to be counted. First place votes are worth 3 points, second place votes are worth 2 points, and third place votes are worth 1 point. Meeting the bonus goal on an entry gets an extra point for that submission.

When voting, please copy/paste the ENTRY NUMBER and the FIC TITLE from the list above into the spot you're voting for (this prevents accidentally mis-numbering a vote and casting it for the wrong entry). It should look like this:

First Place: 61. Fic Title Here
Second Place: 88. Another Fic Title
Third Place: 47. Finally a third fic title goes here

Please note that you cannot vote for your own entry, and that votes cannot be made anonymously. You do not have to be a member of the community in order to vote, nor have submitted an entry for this week; everyone is welcome to participate in the voting. IP addresses are logged to prevent duplicate voting.

Voting closes Wednesday, September 10, at 9:00PM EST.

relieved sigh

The meeting today went okay -- I was afraid that certain feeling would make it difficult.

I don't want to write about it, but it's a reaction I've been getting from someone, leading me to wonder what I did wrong. Yesterday there were tears.

Luckily, no such reaction tonight.

I'm working on renewing my passport. "Working" is right! I've divided the task into *twelve steps and have done the first three. I can do the rest tomorrow, or spread them over two days.

*purely a coincidence

(no subject)

Banged open another garden waste bag and removed the vines etc that I cut yesterday, plus many many dustpans of cherry pits, plus more vines, while Oliver the dog barked his head off at Noise!  Noise next door!!  Alarm alarm!!! SND is a sweetheart but her one fault is not training her dogs out of barking. Though if Olly is indeed part chihuahua, there's probably no training him. I suppose he does as a guard dog but there's an element of boy who cried wolf to him.  What's to distinguish a burglar bark from a squirrel bark, a me hanging out clothes bark, or a Prof. Islamic Studies and his circular saw bark?

Anyway, bag is now too heavy to lift so must drag it down the alleyway between houses for Thursday's pickup. I don't know if gardening counts as exercise but I'm sweating and panting as if I'd done a calisthenics class, so maybe it does. What becomes clearer is that I need to strengthen both my core and my 'good' left leg, because lower back and artificial knee are what hurt most when I garden.

Dentist's secretary calls. Insurance will give me one crown for 300 and change, which is a bargain, but will not give me the other crown she wants replaced. I might fork out the $1000+ that will cost me, or might try rolling it over into next year.

Finished Brokedown Palace and am unsure what the point of it was, aside from the grand Hungarian tradition of fratricide maybe? Not sure if there is a grand Hungarian fratricidal tradition,  but what am I to make of the oldest brother half-killing the youngest at the book's start, and trying it again and again thereafter, and then saying You know I would never kill you? No, frankly, I don't know anything of the sort. And the fact that your brother says Oh yes I know, suggests that he's sustained some sort of brain trauma along the way.  But is done, finally, and back at the library, and I can go on  to other things.

Capclave!

I have my schedule for Capclave! I'm doing three panels and a reading (should probably figure out what I'm reading...). Here's what we've got:

The Power of Places. Friday, 5:00. Every work of fiction has a setting.  This is especially true of science fiction and fantasy where the settings are imaginary – other planets and fantasy realms. How do writers decide on a setting and communicate it to the reader? What makes some settings seem real while others mere painted backdrops? How does society help to shape the world around it? What writers have effective settings and what techniques do they use?

The Absolute Boss. Friday, 7:00. Much of SF/Fantasy has Galactic Emperors and Kings of fantasy kingdoms. We have Disney Princesses but not Disney Elected Leaders. Many plots feature the Return of the King. Why are there so few democracies in SF/Fantasy?  What does it mean when our entertainments focus on absolute rulers?

Author Reading, Marissa Lingen. Saturday, 3:00.

Hopeful Fiction for Dark Times. Saturday, 4:00. The world seems to be in a dark place, such that "peddling hope" could appear irresponsible. Panelists will talk about hopepunk, cozy fantasy, and other forms of "lighter" fiction, giving examples, and talking about how hope is particularly important.

In my time on earth, I said too much, but not nearly, not nearly enough

Unless I lost track of one in the phone tree, I have just spent my afternoon calling five different doctor's offices, garnished with one bookstore and one library, and I would still like a refund on selected and considerable tracts of physical existence. In other news, while I have always had an inevitable affection for the mild-mannered character acting of Donald Meek, I have not seen him anywhere near recently enough to explain his appearance in last night's dreams, especially not the one with the used book store crumbling literally on the edge of some awful revelation. Over the last three days, I mainlined a rewatch of the first two seasons of Turn: Washington's Spies (2014–17) and just before bed had started re-reading Paul French's Midnight in Peking (2011), which in the years since I originally read and much later wrote about it has garnered at least one nonfiction rebuttal and more contextually interested explorations, because nothing engages the human instinct for rabbit holes like a cold murder case. No offense to Donald Meek, I'm not sure where he came in.

P.S. Stop the presses, Benny Safdie and Dwayne Johnson will be adapting Daniel Pinkwater's Lizard Music (1976)? They had better get the Surrealism.

Quick and rather perfunctory reading catchup from last week

No proof-of-life post happened over the weekend, but I did get some reading done last week.

[personal profile] scruloose and I have started listening to Exit Strategy (Murderbot 4).

Fiction: I finished and enjoyed The Future of Another Timeline (Annalee Newitz) and now I'm reading Saint Death's Daughter (C.S.E. Cooney), and am maybe halfway through? This one has a lot of detail going on on the worldbuilding front, and after reading the first chapter or two one night and then not getting back to it for a couple of days, I had to go re-skim right from the beginning before carrying on, which is unusual. (A glance or two back, sure. Actually rereading the whole beginning? Not so much.)

Non-fiction: I finished Goblin Mode (McKayla Coyle) and can't say I got much out of it; I'm still reading Daniel Sherrell's Warmth: Coming of Age at the End of Our World.

INSANE CHARITY BIKE RIDE 2025 – LUCKY 13!

Posted by John Kovalic

For the thirteenth year, I’m taking to a bicycle, to help raise money to help local farmers get fresh-food to local low-income and elderly households.

This year will be different, however. IF we can hit the $20,000 goal:

(a) I will cycle with the Duck of Doom on my helmet, but more importantly

(b) That will bring the grand total of all Insane Charity Bike Rides (2011-2025) to A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS!

A few things to note:

  • The original Munchkin card art at the $375 and above levels will be from a MAJOR upcoming Munchkin release. How major? I can’t say what it its, but it will be announced at Gamehole Con in October, and it should blow your socks off! You won’t want to miss it!
  • I’ve added Sponsorship levels, so companies can pick up advertising at DorkTower.com that is 100% a charitable deduction, tax-wise. These may be added to any level.
  • The 2024 swag went out later than I had hoped. This was entirely on me. I shall endeavor this year to have all swag sent off by US Thanksgiving, 2025.
  • Due to a terribly busy summer, this is the latest I’ve ever launched an Insane Charity Bike Ride campaign, so I’m kind of worried about hitting the $20,000 goal. But I have hope…
